Understanding Card Centering

Card centering refers to how well the image and borders of a trading card are aligned with the edges of the card stock. It's typically measured as a ratio or percentage.

For example, 60/40 centering means one border is 60% of the total border space, and the opposite border is 40%. Perfect centering is 50/50.

Centering is a key factor in determining a card's grade. Higher grades (like PSA 10 Gem Mint or BGS 10 Pristine) require near-perfect centering, although the exact standards vary by grading company.

Tips for Better Scanning

Card Placement

Place the card flat on a clean, contrasting background (e.g., black felt or dark paper). Ensure the entire card, including all borders and corners, is visible in the scan.

Lighting

Use bright, even, and indirect lighting. Avoid direct overhead lights or sunlight which can cause glare or harsh shadows. A well-lit room or a light box is ideal.

Card Protection

For best results, scan the card raw (outside of any sleeve or slab). If scanning in a sleeve, use a new, clean, tight-fitting penny sleeve to minimize glare and distortion. Avoid scanning in top loaders or graded slabs if possible, as the extra plastic layers can interfere with detection.

Avoid Tilt / Angle

Hold your phone directly above the card, parallel to the surface. Scanning at an angle (tilting the phone) will distort the card's perspective and lead to inaccurate centering measurements.
