Pokémon Card Centering Guide: PSA 10 Checks for English & Japanese

Pokémon card centering for a PSA 10: where to measure yellow, silver and full-art cards, back centering, English vs Japanese, and a step-by-step check.

For a PSA 10, a Pokémon card needs front centering within approximately 55/45 and back centering within 75/25, measured on the worse of the two axes. That is PSA's published Gem Mint standard and it applies to every card, English or Japanese, vintage or modern. PSA 9 loosens to approximately 60/40 front and 90/10 back.

Where you measure is the part most guides skip. On a standard English card you measure the yellow border, from the cut edge of the card to the inner edge of the yellow frame, on all four sides. On ex, V and VMAX cards it is the silver border; on gold secret rares it is the gold border. On full-art and alternate-art cards there is no border at all, and you fall back to consistent printed elements. On the back you measure the blue frame. Get the reference edges wrong and every number after that is wrong.

Centering is the only one of PSA's four criteria you can measure objectively at home with a ruler or a scan, which is why it should be the first check before you spend a grading fee. This guide covers the reference edges for every Pokémon card style, the tolerances at each grader, why English and Japanese cards behave differently, and a step-by-step measurement routine.

The numbers: centering tolerances for Pokémon at each grader

Pokémon cards are graded against each company's general standard; there is no separate Pokémon tolerance. The one exception is TAG, which publishes different back tolerances for TCG and sports cards. CGC publishes numeric ratios for grades below 10 only for "sports and non-sports cards," and states no TCG ratio for 9 and below.

Notice how tight the top is. PSA's 10 line and TAG's Gem Mint line are the same 55/45, but a BGS 9.5 requires 55/45 "both ways," and a Black Label, CGC Pristine, SGC Pristine or TAG Pristine wants 50/50 or close to it on the front. A card that is 54/46 is a PSA 10 candidate and a BGS 9.5 candidate, but not a Black Label candidate.

Where to measure on each Pokémon card style

Standard yellow-border cards (commons through holo rares)

Measure the width of the yellow border itself: from the physical card edge to the line where the yellow stops and the card's inner frame (the art box, name bar or colored background) begins. Do it on the left, right, top and bottom. Left and right form one ratio; top and bottom form the other. A typical English yellow border is roughly 2.5–3 mm per side, so the combined width across an axis is roughly 5–6 mm.

Do not measure to the artwork inside the frame. The art and the yellow border are printed together, so the art-to-frame relationship is fixed; only the position of the cut relative to the printing changes. You are measuring the cut.

Silver-border cards (ex, V, VMAX, VSTAR) and gold secret rares

Same method, different color. Measure from the card edge to the inner edge of the silver or gold frame. Foil edges can glare in a photo, so tilt the light, not the card, until the frame edge is crisp. On VMAX cards with very busy backgrounds, the silver frame is still the reference; ignore the Pokémon breaking out of the art box.

GX and Tag Team double-border designs

GX-era cards have an outer border plus a thick inner frame, and collectors frequently complain that they "look off-center" even when they are not. The reference is still the outermost border: card edge to the outer frame. The inner frame is printed in a fixed relationship to the outer one, so it cannot tell you anything about the cut that the outer border does not already tell you. What it can do is fool your eye, because a slightly uneven outer border plus a visually heavy inner frame exaggerates the imbalance. Measure, do not eyeball.

Full-art, alternate-art and Illustration Rares

There is no border. No grading company publishes an official method for borderless cards, so what follows is how collectors and most measurement tools handle it: pick a printed element that runs parallel to the card edge and is the same on every copy, such as the name bar, the attack text box, or the inner frame line that many full-arts still carry, and measure from the card edge to that element on opposite sides. Compare the result to recently graded copies of the same card if you can. The commonly understood principle is that centering on a full-art card is about the cut, not the artwork, so you want an element that moves with the print, not a painterly edge. The back

English and Japanese Pokémon backs carry a blue frame around the central design. Measure from the card edge to the inner edge of that frame on all four sides, exactly like the front. Backs are often worse than fronts, and collectors routinely use the back border lines to settle arguments when the front is ambiguous. Remember PSA's back line for a 10 is 75/25, not 90/10; a surprising number of submitters believe the back only needs 90/10 for a 10, which is the PSA 9 line.

English vs Japanese: border thickness and reported gem rates

The single biggest difference between English and Japanese Pokémon cards for centering is the border. Japanese cards have a much thinner border than the English yellow frame. That has two effects, one cosmetic and one practical.

Cosmetically, the same ratio looks smaller on a thin border. Take a 60/40 cut:

Because PSA's standard includes an eye-appeal variance clause, and because thick high-contrast borders make off-centering look worse, collectors generally consider a miscentered Japanese card more forgiving to the eye than an English card at the same number. Some collectors also report PSA being harsher on Japanese backs; that is anecdote.

Practically, thin borders are harder to measure. On a 3 mm English border, a 0.25 mm measurement error moves you from 50/50 to about 54/46. On a 1.5 mm Japanese border the same 0.25 mm error moves you to about 58/42. A handheld phone photo with slight tilt can easily introduce 0.25 mm of error. For Japanese cards, scan flat or use a tripod-style straight-down shot and let the calculator's guide lines do the fine work.

On outcomes, community data is striking. PokeInvest, which derives its numbers from PSA's population report, reports as of August 2026 an overall PSA 10 rate of 43.9% across more than 15 million graded Pokémon cards, a modern (2023 and later) gem rate of 60.3%, and a vintage (pre-2003) gem rate of 9.9%. The same site states that "recent Japanese cards routinely gem above 90%." Those are community-compiled figures, not official PSA statistics, but the direction is consistent with what collectors report: modern Japanese product is the easiest Pokémon to gem, and centering is a large part of why. Industry-wide, cllct reported a 50% gem rate for TCG cards in the first half of 2025 and 59% for 2020s cards, against 34% for sports.

WOTC vintage vs modern: set expectations before you measure

Wizards of the Coast-era English cards (1999–2003) are widely reported to have notoriously inconsistent centering, and the population numbers show it. PokeInvest lists Neo Genesis Typhlosion #17 at a 0.11% PSA 10 rate (4 tens out of 3,653 graded) and Neo Genesis Lugia #9 at 0.15% (15 out of 10,043). Not all of that is centering, but on WOTC holos centering is usually the first thing that fails.

Collectors also describe whole print runs that are off the same way. One forum thread asked why every copy of a particular Snorlax promo measured about 58/42; the answer is that centering is set by the sheet cut, so if the sheet alignment was off for that run, every card from it inherits the same offset. Pack-fresh does not mean centered. Several experienced graders-by-hobby put it bluntly: pack-fresh English cards are "usually PSA 9," and the ones that become 10s are the ones that happened to be cut well.

Modern cards are better on average, which is why the modern gem rate is so much higher, but they are not uniform. Step-by-step: check a Pokémon card's centering for a PSA 10

  1. Take the card out of the sleeve. Penny sleeves and toploaders add reflections and can hide a quarter millimeter of border. Handle by the edges.
  2. Put it on a dark, matte, flat surface. Dark backgrounds make the card edge unmistakable; yellow borders on a white desk are hard to detect.
  3. Shoot straight down, or scan. A flatbed scan is the gold standard because it has zero perspective. If you use a phone, hold it parallel to the card, centered over it, and do not tilt. Perspective is the single biggest error source in home measurements.
  4. Upload to the free card centering calculator. It detects the card and border edges, lets you drag guide lines to the exact reference edges described above, and reports left/right and top/bottom ratios mapped to PSA, BGS, CGC, SGC and TAG tolerances.
  5. Measure at two points per side if you measure by hand. A card can be 55/45 at the top of the left border and 57/43 at the bottom if the cut is slightly tilted (a diamond cut). Use the worse reading.
  6. Run the math if you want to double-check. Larger border ÷ (larger + smaller) × 100. Example on an English holo: left border 3.1 mm, right 2.5 mm → 3.1 ÷ 5.6 = 55.4% → roughly 55/45, right on the PSA 10 line. Top 3.4 mm, bottom 2.2 mm → 3.4 ÷ 5.6 = 60.7% → 61/39, which is the PSA 9 line. The card is a 61/39 card because the worse axis governs.
  7. Flip it and repeat on the blue back. Back 75/25 is the PSA 10 line. Example: top 3.8 mm, bottom 1.6 mm → 3.8 ÷ 5.4 = 70.4% → 70/30, inside 75/25, fine for a 10.
  8. Only then look at corners, edges and surface. If centering already caps the card at a 9, you can decide whether a 9 is worth the fee before you spend twenty minutes under a loupe.

A note on the last step: centering is the only criterion an app can measure. No photo tool can tell you about a surface scratch under the holo or a soft corner. The grading standards guide lists what each grader expects on the other three criteria.

What "good centering" means on a Pokémon card, in plain terms

  • 50/50 to 53/47 both axes, front and back: as good as it gets; Pristine and Black Label territory if the rest is flawless.
  • 54/46 to 55/45 worse axis, back within 75/25: meets PSA's published 10 line and TAG's Gem Mint line; meets BGS 9.5 on centering.
  • 56/44 to 60/40: PSA 9 territory on paper. Collectors report occasional discretionary 10s for single-axis cases, but plan for a 9. See is 60/40 centering a PSA 10?.
  • 61/39 to 65/35: PSA 8 line. Still sells well raw as Near Mint; not a grading candidate for most modern cards unless the card is expensive enough that an 8 carries a premium.
  • Worse than 70/30: visibly off. For raw sales, TCGplayer's Near Mint guideline is widely cited as allowing centering up to about 70/30, so beyond that you should disclose it. Bottom line

  • PSA 10 on a Pokémon card means approximately 55/45 front and 75/25 back, worse axis governs; PSA 9 is 60/40 and 90/10. There is no Pokémon-specific tolerance at any grader except TAG's TCG back split.
  • Measure the outermost printed border (yellow, silver or gold) from the card edge, never the artwork; on GX double-border cards ignore the inner frame; on full-arts use a fixed printed element and compare to graded copies.
  • Japanese borders are thinner, so the same ratio looks better and measures worse: a 0.25 mm error is about 4 points on an English border and about 8 points on a Japanese one. Scan Japanese cards.
  • Community data (PokeInvest) puts the overall Pokémon PSA 10 rate at 43.9%, modern at 60.3%, vintage at 9.9%; WOTC centering is the usual reason vintage fails.
  • Check centering first, both sides, before you spend a grading fee; it is the only criterion you can measure exactly at home.

What is baka centering on a Pokémon card?

Baka is Japanese slang roughly meaning foolish or silly, and collectors use baka centering as a joke label for a card whose centering is so far off that it is obvious at a glance, often with one border several times wider than its opposite. It is not a grading term. No grading company uses it; a card like that would simply receive a low numeric grade, an OC designation, or an MC designation if part of another card shows.

Does back centering matter on Pokémon cards?

Yes. PSA requires 75/25 or better on the reverse for a 10 and 90/10 for a 9; BGS requires 55/45 on the back for a Pristine 10 and 60/40 for a 9.5; TAG's TCG back tolerance is approximately 65/35 for Gem Mint 10 and 52/48 for Pristine.
